Nelson Mandela International Day was launched in recognition of Nelson Mandela’s birthday on 18 July in 2009 via unanimous decision of the UN General Assembly.
The day was inspired by Nelson Mandela's plea to the next generation to get involved and make a difference.
Today, Mandela Day is more than just a celebration of Madiba’s life and legacy, it's a worldwide movement to carry Mandela's legacy into the future and make the world a better place.
We encourage all South Africans to get involved by spending 67 minutes of their day serving their communities and helping others. And it doesn't just have to happen on 18 July – you can make every day a Mandela Day.
To get involved and find out what others are doing with their 67 minutes, follow the #time2serve and #mandeladay hashtags on social media.
