Before the advent of cloud computing, businesses needed to invest in their own servers, server rooms and manage every aspect from maintenance to security. As operations grew, more hardware needed to be purchased or upgraded. When problems arose, IT specialists were needed to troubleshoot every possible part of the infrastructure. Businesses evolved  to leverage professional serviced data centres - but that didn’t solve the challenges associated with owning the hardware.

The good news is that the evolution continues. The cloud has enabled businesses to be  more flexible which is essential in today's fast-paced business world. By accessing a massive pool of computing resources provided by global cloud services industry leader, Microsoft, you can host your web servers, email servers, databases, file storage servers, user directories, or anything else you might want. When you need more computing resources, you don’t have to purchase physical hardware. The cloud shares the hardware and automatically assigns the work as necessary.

But even this solution can be daunting if IT isn't your main area of expertise. That's where Vodacom comes in, providing expert advice and assistance for businesses of all sizes to access the benefits of the cloud.

With that in mind, Vodacom, in partnership with Microsoft, has announced that it will be launching Microsoft Azure solutions for customers this June. Microsoft Azure is a collection of various cloud computing services, including remotely hosted and managed versions of proprietary Microsoft technologies, open source Linux distributions or open source databases, deployable inside a custom sized virtual machine. Anything that can be done on a normal physical server can also be done on the Microsoft Azure platform. Customers can move their entire data centers to the cloud and experience the business benefits that comes from cost-effective, scalable and on-demand cloud infrastructure. Vodacom professional service removes the complexity of cloud adoption by providing experts to assist with designing cloud migration strategies for Azure, while providing ongoing support.

Microsoft Azure features include:

  • Tight security built-in (one less thing to worry to about)
  • Short term high System Performance (eg. High performance during month end processing ,peak website traffic during specials)
  • Speed to deploy systems and software
  • Cheaper running expenses than traditional IT in most business case scenarios

Azure’s billing structure is based on resource consumption (pay-as-you-use) or alternatively reserved servers for 12months or 36months which provide discounts from 12% to 40%. Pricing varies between different types of services, storage types, and the physical location from which your services are hosted.

An enterprise-proven cloud solution

Speaking during the launch at the Microsoft offices in Bryanston, Fatima Hassim, Managing Executive for Products and Services at Vodacom Business, noted that Microsoft Azure enables developers and IT professionals to create, manage and deploy applications through Microsoft’s global network of data centres.

'Vodacom’s offering of Microsoft Azure will allow businesses the ability to provide enterprise-proven hybrid cloud solutions, and offer customers access to professional services that will be readily available, providing the best approach and solutions on the platform to allow customers to maximise efficiencies,' said Fatima.

From a Vodacom perspective, Fatima said the launch of the suite of Microsoft Azure solutions complements Vodacom Enterprise’s vision to help accelerate the digital transformation journey for businesses in South Africa.

Ravi Bhat, Cloud and Enterprise Business Group Lead at Microsoft South Africa, said: 'Vodacom customers will have access to professional services, provided by experts, who will be readily available to provide the best approach and solutions on the platform to allow customers to maximise on efficiencies and save on costs.'
