Apps to improve your lunch break

Whether you prefer to order in, eat out or bring food from home, these apps will help you make the most of your lunch break.

Your lunch break is an important part of your workday, but it can be challenging to use the designated hour to its full potential. However, there are a few ways to take the hassle out of getting lunch during your break. Whether you like to prepare tasty meals to take to work, want to search for available food spots nearby or would like to get food delivered to your office, here are five apps that will improve your lunch break.

Getting food delivered

OrderIn

OrderIn is a local food delivery app available in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban. It allows you to browse restaurant menus, add driver instructions and a tip to your order, and track your delivery. The app also identifies whether a restaurant is using in-store pricing, which can help you avoid places that raise meal prices for delivery apps.

Mr D Food

Mr D Food is a Takealot-owned food delivery app that covers all major urban centres in South Africa. It features a wide range of restaurants, including review scores and daily promotional offers.

Finding nearby restaurants

Zomato

Zomato is a useful restaurant finder app that allows you to discover nearby restaurants, browse menus and check reviews. You can also bookmark your favourite locations and leave a review of your own.

Eat Out

Like Zomato, the Eat Out app allows you to locate restaurants based on your location, type of cuisine, ratings and more. You can also book many restaurants and get directions via the app. Plus, share restaurant details with your dining companions, and mark your favourites for easy reference in future.

Google Maps

Google Maps also allows you to browse nearby restaurants, by searching for “restaurants near me” or “restaurants in [location name]”. When you select a restaurant, you can see an overview, its hours, its distance from you, and other features. Since it is also a real-time navigation app, you can use Maps to direct you to your chosen restaurant.

Preparing your lunch in advance

Tasty

Tasty is a useful recipe app that gives you step-by-step instructions and video demonstrations. If you create an account on the app, you can save your dietary preferences and favourite recipes. One of the best features is the ability to browse for specific meal types, such as lunch. The app includes a range of easy-to-pack lunches, salads and other portable meals that you can prepare for work.
