Benetton are the current powerhouses of Italian club rugby who made everybody sit up and take notice with their Rainbow Cup Final victory over the Vodacom Bulls in 2021. Founded in 1932, they have won an incredible 15 Italian National Championships. They have won virtually every major Italian competition, and in the Pro14 have gained immense respect from their opponents as a team more than capable of an upset. Previously known as Treviso, the team changed their name to Benetton after being acquired by the clothing company in 1979. Their current squad is led by South African Dewald Duvenage and also includes fellow South Africans Andries Coetzee, Corniel Els, Irné Herbst, Rhyno Christo Smith, Braam Steyn, Carl Wegner, Eli Snyman and Petrus Francois Smith.
If you want to sound like a local: Referring to the team as “Treviso” will buy you some street cred with hardcore Italian rugby fans, who still call the club by its original name.
What you didn’t know: The international clothing brand Benetton was started by four siblings whose father owned a bicycle shop. Luciano Benetton sold his own bicycle at the age of 14 and bought a knitting machine and together with his sister and two brothers started making pullovers.
