This visual treat from writer and director Alex Garland stars Natalie Portman as a biologist and former soldier who travels into The Shimmer, a slowly expanding zone of rapidly mutating flora and fauna, looking for an answer to what happened to her critically ill husband. This tense, thought-provoking film is a gift to any sci-fi fan.

    Beasts of No Nation

This wartime drama from True Detectives director Cary Fukunaga's is a visceral character study tracking a young boy named Agu after he's recruited to be a child soldier in an African civil war (its specifics are left purposely ambiguous). Lorded over by Idris Elba’s frightening commander, the movie is alternatively loud, tender, and violent -- a coming-of-age story in which the characters may not live to come of age.

This modern fantasy takes place in an alternate present day, where humans, orcs, elves and fairies have been coexisting since the beginning of time. Two police officers, one a human, the other an orc, embark on a routine night patrol that will alter the future of their world as they know it. Battling both their own personal differences as well as an onslaught of enemies, they must work together to protect a young female elf and a thought-to-be-forgotten relic, which, in the wrong hands, could destroy everything.

    The Week Of

Adam Sandler and Chris Rock star in this brand-new comedy which tells the story of two fathers who are polar opposites and the dysfunctional hilarity that ensues when they are forced to spend the entire week together in the build-up to wedding of their children.

    Stranger Things

If you haven't watched the cult phenomenon that is Stranger Things, you need to stop what you're doing and start right now. The series centres on a group of school friends in the 80s who stumble into a massive government conspiracy when one of their number goes missing. Soon they find themselves exploring otherworldly dimensions, assisting a superpowered fugitive and fighting off terrifying monsters from beyond. With a host of memorable characters and a plot filled with genuine intrigue and emotional depth, it has humour and horror balanced to a fine art.

    Lost in Space

In this sci-fi epic, the Robinson family has been chosen to start a new life in a space colony. On the way to what they believe will be a better world, the Robinsons' ship is abruptly thrown off course and they are thrown into a dangerous alien environment. Now light-years from their original destination, they must forge new alliances and work together to survive.

    The Crown

The Crown tells the incredible true story of Britain's longest-serving monarch, Queen Elizabeth II. It kicks off with her as a 25-year-old princess faced with the prospect of leading her country and empire. With acclaimed performances by Claire Foy as Elizabeth and Matt Smith as Prince Philip, this is one to watch.

    Money Heist

In this Spanish series, a group of very peculiar robbers assault the Factory of Moneda and Timbre to carry out the most perfect robbery in the history of Spain and take home 2,400 million euros.
