Annihilation
This visual treat from writer and director Alex Garland stars Natalie Portman as a biologist and former soldier who travels into The Shimmer, a slowly expanding zone of rapidly mutating flora and fauna, looking for an answer to what happened to her critically ill husband. This tense, thought-provoking film is a gift to any sci-fi fan.
Beasts of No Nation
This wartime drama from True Detectives director Cary Fukunaga's is a visceral character study tracking a young boy named Agu after he's recruited to be a child soldier in an African civil war (its specifics are left purposely ambiguous). Lorded over by Idris Elba’s frightening commander, the movie is alternatively loud, tender, and violent -- a coming-of-age story in which the characters may not live to come of age.
