With today's technology, you can travel around the world in 80 minutes. Who needs 80 days? In our own country, there is an endless amount of information to explore, and it's all available on your mobile phone. Many of these experiences are enhanced with VR - if you haven't tried it out yet, do our Heritage Day quiz and stand a chance to win one of two Samsung Gear VRs.

Get the Mzansi experience on Google Maps

There's no need to wait for a sunny day to go up to Table Mountain. You can go up and appreciate the view, all the while snacking on popcorn in your own living room. Using Street View technology, Google has captured some of South Africa's most loved destinations for all to enjoy.

After taking in the sights on Table Mountain, head over to Kruger National Park. If you're lucky, you might spot an elephant or rhinoceros, or even an elusive leopard. Just don't get out of your car.

We'd still recommend you take the cable car up Table Mountain (or hike up if you're fit!) when you visit the Mother City.

Explore our history

Nelson Mandela's writings and other archived materials related to his life are available online on the Nelson Mandela Digital Archive Project. It's an incredibly detailed source of information, with exhibits ranging from The Presidential Years to Madiba's Speeches. Many of his handwritten notes are contained in the archive.

On Google Cultural Institute, you can also experience various online exhibitions that describe South Africa's history.

Meet South Africa's icons

Get up close with leaders and pioneers in various fields, from the contemporary artist Athi Patra-Ruga to Phillip Tobias, one of the scientists who persuaded the world to see Africa as the cradle of humankind. Over the past few years, the 21 Icons team has documented human achievement through photography, film and stories.

Visit Robben Island

Have you been to Robben Island? Cross the ocean to the island a stone's throw away from Cape Town Harbour, and go on a virtual tour with former political prisoner Vusumsi Mcongo. The Robben Island Prison Tour is definitely worth doing, and it's a great way to end your quick tour of South Africa top heritage sites.
