Five SEO tips for small businesses

Here are some top tips on how to best optimise your website's SEO for better site views.

There’s no use in investing time and money to build a beautiful website if your customers can’t find it. But how can you make your site stand out in the ocean of content on the Internet?

Search engine optimization (SEO) is how you help customers find your site when they search for it online. By building your site the right way and optimizing your keywords, you’ll drive more traffic to your page and generate more sales. Here are some top tips on how to best optimise your SEO to ensure more people are visiting your site:

Find the right keywords

Make a list of 20 to 50 keywords that you think your customers will be searching for to find your business's products or services. Then create a Google Adwords account and investigate the keyword search volume for your keywords. You can then ensure that the keywords you chose are frequently used in online searches. Use your keywords on each of your website pages to help them rank higher when prospective customers search using those keywords.

Start by using keywords in the URL—the address appearing in the internet browser for each of your website pages. Also include them in your titles as well as in your metadata descriptions (the brief text that tells search engines what your content is about).

Use Google Search Console to DIY Your SEO

Google Search Console is free and allows you to add your entire site to the platform. An integral part of technical SEO, the console will provide you with insight on:

  • Performance
  • Coverage
  • Enhancements

Consequently, coverage is important because it tells you about the errors found on your site during a Google crawl. Correcting these errors helps maximize your site’s indexed pages and can be used to improve user experience.

Keep your business listing up to date

For small businesses, business listing profiles such as Google My Business (GMB) are important. A GMB profile can help you rank on Google and get new customers for your small business. That's why you should optimize your GMB profile properly and keep it updated with the latest details, including working hours, images, phone numbers, email, etc. Users will be able to get to know more about your business and can contact you and buy from you.

Optimize for Mobile

Approximately 81% of mobile users search for a product or service online. Google’s mobile-first index also makes heavy use of voice search. Your site, if it’s using WordPress, Shopify, or another platform, should be easy to optimize for mobile if it’s not optimized already. Responsive themes will work on any screen size, allowing your visitor's easy access to your site on their smartphones or tablets.

Enter in your URL and test it to see what changes Google recommends for your site. The test will provide a screenshot of how the page looks on mobile and any issues with page loading. You can then read the report to see how you can fix your mobile site.

Make sure your website is user-friendly

Have a clean, easy-to-navigate website. Make sure it’s immediately clear to visitors who you are and what you’re offering. Use a lot of headings to improve readability, and put your keywords in the headings. Headings stand out for search engines and will help you rank higher. Site speed is also important for SEO. The last thing you want to do is annoy your visitors with a sluggish site.
