Meet our people: Elijah Indarjit - Exploring the Data Core

Elijah Indarjit joined Vodacom in 2015 as part of the Discover Graduate Programme, and will soon be off to Turkey to hone his skills in the international Vodafone market.

Elijah Indarjit joined Vodacom in 2015 as part of the Discover Graduate Programme and is currently a Data Core specialist. He will soon  head off to Turkey to hone his skills; we chatted to him about his journey thus far.

What does your job entail?

As a Senior Specialist in Core Data and Infrastructure ; I am involved in the research, testing, integration and implementation of new technology.

What did you study and how did you join Vodacom?

My journey with Vodacom started in university when I was a first-year student, studying towards a Bachelor of Science and Computer Engineering. I graduated with Honours and thereafter joined the company through the Discover Graduate Programme in 2015.

What has your experience been like working at Vodacom?

Being part of the Discover Graduate Programme has exposed me to invaluable insights around effective teamwork, leadership and emotional intelligence. All of this assisted me to fit into the collaborative and dynamic working environment found throughout Vodacom. One of the highlights for me has been the life coaching, where I received invaluable advice on advancing my career and goals. One of the most satisfying aspects of working at Vodacom is the evolving nature of the work. For example, last year there was a strong focus on the Internet of Things (IoT) while this year we are focusing more heavily on Cloud Technology. This means that there are always new projects, new challenges and new learning experiences.

What excites you about working for Vodacom?

What excites me about Vodacom is that they don’t just focus on the development of your job, but rather on your career as a whole. Vodacom allows you the opportunity to pursue post-grad studies through their own  bursary programme. There is also online training available via  the Vodafone University platform, covering technical, social, business and legal aspects.

What would you say to someone thinking of joining Vodacom?

My advice for those who are interested in joining Vodacom (as well as those who currently work for Vodacom) is to become involved in strategic projects which will allow you to acquire in-depth and valuable knowledge, making you attractive to the corporate world. You also need to be technically savvy and keep up to date with the latest advances in the tech world. Familiarising yourself with the architecture of Vodacom, as well as the way the company runs its operations will stand you in good stead for advancement.

A career development tip that I can share is to study further and continuously develop your knowledge of trends in the work environment in which you specialise. Challenge yourself at every opportunity, because with challenges come the achievement of knowledge enhancement. You should always seek to step outside of your pre-defined job description, for example, focus on improving business processes within your role as well as the business organisation in general.
