Meet our people: Elisha Mohlanga - From finance to HR

Elisha Mohlanga joined Vodacom as a bursar, and has never looked back. He tells us how Vodacom helped him achieve his career dream.

Vodacom is dedicated to helping its people achieve their dreams - even if that means changing field. Just ask Elisha Mohlanga, Senior Specialist: Organisational Effectiveness & Change, who changed career paths from finance to HR.

Elisha tells us about his career journey within Vodacom.

'I first came into contact with Vodacom in 2002 while in my second year at university through their bursary scheme. I applied for a bursary and they funded the completion of my BCom Financial Accounting. I am currently finalising a Post Grad Diploma in Financial Management, also through the staff bursary.

'My current job entails Headcount & Employment Costs management for the Vodacom Group of companies. I assist the company in identifying risks and opportunities, as well as ensuring that resources are allocated correctly to strategic growth areas of the business.

Working at Vodacom has been a rewarding and great experience. I have been blessed to have worked in two different functions: Finance and HR, having moved within the organisation since I joined the company in 2004. Vodacom's focus on career development has enabled me to move roles from creditors to payroll, budgeting, FP&A, and now Organisational Effectiveness & Change within HR.

'The work that I do now is very exciting, working with budgets and interacting with senior leaders in the business.

'The highlight so far has been when I moved from Finance to HR. It was a tough choice to move from a traditional finance role - I had spent over 13 years in finance, and I never thought that HR could be as exciting as it is.

'Successfully finalising the budget for the new financial year has been one of my career highlights at Vodacom. Another highlight was when I was featured in Sunday Times: Employer of Choice in 2006, as an example of a young person who has come through the bursary scheme and joined one of the big brands in telecommunications.

'Vodacom is a great company with great growth opportunities. The company offers bursaries, and I am living proof of the fantastic development opportunities that are offered to employees. On top of that, the culture is warm, and the people are also warm.'
