Our fave TV dads

Father's Day is coming up on Sunday, 18 June and there is no better day of the week to sit back, switch off your phone, and binge-watch series and movies on Showmax.

Father's Day is coming up on Sunday, 18 June and there is no better day of the week to sit back, switch off your phone, and binge-watch series and movies on Showmax.

Perhaps you're a dad looking to chill out and reward yourself for a job well done, or maybe you can't spend Father's Day with your dad or the special mentor in your life. No matter - Showmax, as always, has a show for that!

To get your entertainment sorted for the day, we've put together a list of some of the best TV dads from our favourite shows. And we couldn't forget the fathers who make us cringe - they may be the dodgiest dads on the box, but they're awesome to watch.

So here's to all the boring dad jokes, the high-riding pants and the smell of Old Spice. Fathers - we salute you!

The Best

1. Eddard Stark from Game of Thrones

From the very first episode you’ll see that the Lord of Winterfell leads from the front - and when Ned (Sean Bean) carries out judgement, he also delivers the punishment. Honourable, fair and just, he loved his family and raised his children with dignity and respect. He also gave them Dire Wolves as pets, so you know he’s cool too. No one can say that he wasn't willing to make sacrifices to fulfill his responsibilities.

2. Martin Crane from Frasier

Marty (John Mahoney) is the type of pops who always gives the best advice. And when knowledge speaks, in the form of his son Frasier (Kelsey Grammer) thinking he knows everything, wisdom listens - and responds with wickedly funny one-liners. That’s ol’ Marty. What a guy!

3. Ross Geller from Friends

Oh Ross (David Schwimmer) you goof ball! You can’t help but like this guy. Yes, he can be a bit odd sometimes, okay a lot of the time, but there's one thing that's certain: he loves his kids. From dressing up as the Holiday Armadillo, to singing 'Baby Got Back' to make his baby daughter laugh, he's a great dad.

4. Dexter Morgan from Dexter

Okay, this is a tricky one. He loves his wife and son and would do anything to protect them, quite literally, but he’s also a serial killer. That’s not good. But Dex (Michael Hall) only kills other killers, so that’s not bad? Eish, this is tough. Ultimately Dex is a good guy who does bad things to bad people, so if you’re also a good guy then you have nothing to fear.

The Worst

5. Frank Gallagher from Shameless

If you're looking for the ultimate deadbeat dad, look no further than Frank Gallagher (William H Macy). His main preoccupation isn't the welfare of his 10 (he thinks) kids or his grandkids, but rather finding the next person to scam. Despite his many faults, he does turn up for his kids when it counts, and tries hard to turn his life around. He may be the worst dad on the list, but we still hold out hope for his redemption.

6. Tony Soprano from The Sopranos

There’s nothing Tony (James Gandolfini) likes more than a homemade melanzane with his family. And while he loves his familia, Tony is also a Mob boss who followed in his father’s footsteps. His lifestyle puts his family in danger and he also has many mistresses on the side. Eventually all the pressure gets to Tony, and he has to see a shrink for guidance - something no Soprano has ever done.

All of these series and movies are available for you to watch on Showmax right now!
