The Samsung Galaxy S20 first impressions

With Samsung’s latest flagship range revealed, we give you our first impressions of the Galaxy S20...

Samsung’s latest flagships hit the South African market at the beginning of March. But at its Unpacked event in February, media and guests were able to try out the new Galaxy S20 devices.

Here are some of our first impressions of the smartphone range…

Galaxy S20

The Galaxy S20 packs quite the punch. Rather than only slightly tweaking the formula set by the S10, it’s a significant upgrade in terms of camera hardware and battery power.

The smartphone features a triple-lens setup, including a 64MP telephoto lens. Meanwhile, the S20 also has a 4000mAh battery, which should help it deliver great battery performance.

The phone features the sleek design Samsung has adopted over recent years, with a curved edge-to-edge display. However, the design opts for a more minimal keyhole punch in the display for the selfie camera, making it less noticeable when compared to the S10.

The colours Samsung has chosen for the S20 range adds some flair to the smartphone market too, offering a Cloud Pink and Cloud Blue option. Some of the most exciting features include new AI-assisted camera modes, 8K video snaps, and improved zoom capabilities.

Content creation and smartphone photography have definitely been prioritized in the series. Modes like Single Take use AI to create creatively edited clips that will make you feel like a pro.

Galaxy S20+

The Galaxy S20+ is similar to the standard S20 in many ways, but offers more battery power, RAM, and storage. The phone also has a depth-sensing lens that gives the S20+ camera a few extra capabilities such as 3D scanning.

It’s great to see Samsung go back to this formula. Rather than there being a major divide between the S20 and S20+, the S10+ adds another option for consumers who just want a slightly more powerful device.

Galaxy S20 Ultra

The Galaxy S20 Ultra is where Samsung has really come out to play and show us what they can achieve.

Instead of taking a reserved approach and just adding a slightly different third option to the S20 range, the S20 Ultra is for people looking for an ultra-premium device with some of the best specs out there.

The standout feature is definitely its camera setup. The quadruple-lens main camera features a 108MP wide-angle lens and a 48MP telephoto lens---making it one of the highest resolution smartphone cameras on the market.

With this impressive camera hardware, the S20 Ultra can zoom in up to 100 times---the highest zoom of any Samsung smartphone camera. Then, there’s the inclusion of a 40MP selfie camera as a cherry on top. To support this powerful hardware, the S20 Ultra also has 12GB to 16GB of RAM and a 5000mAh battery. All this fits into a lightweight and surprisingly comfortable form factor. The display measures 6.9-inches, making it the largest non-foldable display on any Samsung smartphone. But when you interact with the device, it doesn’t feel excessively large or unwieldy.

The S20 Ultra is the kind of device that gives tech enthusiasts something to really be excited about.
