Travelling with the kids: tips to keep them entertained on long road trips

Here are some apps to keep the young ones entertained on a road trip

Planning a road trip this December and have some young ones to entertain? We’ve picked some of these apps that are entertaining, educational and informative to help pass the time, for kids from at least 4-13 years old.

Birds of Southern Africa

This free Android app is a must for any bird enthusiast, especially while on a road trip. It lets you view a list of birds, and you can choose images to be small or large, available in English only. The list of birds is extensive, and you can read more about them on Wiki built into the app. You can either browse or type in a name to find more information. It’s an excellent app even if you don’t spot a bird but want to learn more about them.

There are versions for Android – South Africa Travel Guide offline and iOS – South Africa Travel Guide to make your road trip fun with offline zoomable maps, and everything you need to know while on the road. From places to go, road rules, finding things to do near you, interactive points of interest and staying safe. You can also choose to explore by city, culture, economy, history and practical information that is informative so you know where you’re headed with some history to boot.

Google Arts & Culture

We all know and love Google Maps, but did you know there is a Google Arts & Culture app? Last year it partnered with South African Tourism to launch specific local content that is guaranteed to entertain the young ones. Kids can learn from over 1400 stories, view online exhibits, check out collections like museums and explore different themes. You can also learn fun facts about popular sightseeing spots across the country. An educational and entertaining app in one for curious minds.

There are free versions on Android and iOS that offer over a thousand English stories for kids to use in offline mode. This is an excellent way to pass time and handy if you are driving through parts with limited mobile signal. Simply download it on your device before you head off. Both apps have stories by categories; you can browse what’s new or most downloaded. Some of the categories include animals, humour, Aladdin, motivation, and education. The Android option has a button to translate it into another language—entertainment for hours.
