Ulster have a proud rugby history dating back to 1868 and the formation of Ulster’s first rugby club, the North of Ireland Football Club. They have a long list of producing some of the greats of Irish rugby, perhaps none more so than Willie John McBride, the influential lock who captained the British and Irish Lions to victory over the Springboks in 1974. Their current captain Iain Henderson has twice been selected to represent the British and Irish Lions in 2017 and 2021. In the early 2000s, Ulster were coached by South Africa’s Alan Solomons, the former Stormers coach and assistant Springbok coach. Ruan Pienaar and Marcell Coetzee have also both been voted Player of the Year for Ulster, while fellow South African Louis Ludik was another of their most celebrated players. Their current squad includes South African prop Gareth Milasinovich.

If you want to sound like a local: Learn to sing the club anthem “Stand Up for the Ulsterman”. It’s really easy actually. You just sing “Stand Up for the Ulsterman” again and again to the tune of The Village People’s “Go West”.

What you didn’t know: The Red Hand in the club’s crest dates back to the 13th Century, and it signifies a great warrior and was as such bestowed on several ancient kings from the region.
