We spoke with rising star's Yerusha Govender and Linda Shandukani about their experience working at Vodacom and their advice for women in business

These two rising stars share their invaluable advice for fellow women in the business realm, offering guidance on growth, leadership, and personal development. 

Yerusha Govender

Yerusha is an accomplished chartered accountant with an MBA in data analytics. In her 5 years at Vodacom, Yerusha has excelled as the Executive Head of Decision Support for Consumer Business. In this capacity, she spearheads the accountability of commercial teams' performance and critically assesses the pertinence of products and campaigns introduced to the market.

We spoke to Yerusha about what she has learnt during her time with Vodacom.

Could you share your journey at Vodacom?

In March 2018, I joined Vodacom as a principal specialist in Retail Operations, focusing on data analytics for retail stores. By October 2018, I had assumed the role of Executive Head of Retail Operations, overseeing both finance and operations.

How has Vodacom supported your career?

Vodacom granted me a bursary for my MBA in data analytics, taking my career aspirations seriously. I've gained exposure to various commercial decisions and participated in building impactful financial models.

What does it mean to you when a business supports your growth?

It means having a safe space to reach my professional potential, guided by seasoned professionals who help navigate uncertainties.

Tell us about programs for women's growth at Vodacom.

While I haven't attended, I've heard positive feedback about the Women in Leadership program. What stands out to me is the eagerness of senior executives, regardless of gender, to sponsor, coach, and mentor women joining Vodacom.

What challenges and lessons have you learned?

I've realized the importance of kindness and being the change you want to see. Often, we underestimate our ability to influence environments, but we have more power than we think.

Why is personal branding and using your voice important?

Your brand evolves with you, needing constant nurturing for growth. It's the key to unlocking opportunities and building the foundation for your next steps. Your voice amplifies this brand, positioning your value proposition. Don't miss out on these opportunities.

What advice do you have for women aiming to grow at Vodacom or in business?

Share your intellectual opinions boldly; your voice matters. Listen to understand, not just respond. Delivering on commitments builds a reputation that resonates. Lastly, prioritize your happiness and fulfilment, sharing love and positivity wherever you go.

 

Linda Shandukani

Linda Shandukani is a County Manager within the Consumer Business Unit in the Mpumalanga region of Vodacom Business. She spoke with us about the importance of defining yourself within your role as well as offered practical advice for young women in the business world. 

Could you share your journey at Vodacom?

My journey started in 2006 as a Sales Support Agent. Progressing to roles like Consultant/Support for Strategic and Key Accounts, Field Service Consultant, and Account Manager for Large Enterprises, I gained diverse experiences. Today, I'm a County Manager for Ehlanzeni, a testament to Vodacom's trust and commitment to my growth.

What does it mean when a business supports your growth?

When a business invests in my growth, it signifies recognition of employees as individuals with unique potential. It means valuing employees beyond their roles and providing learning opportunities, skill development, and career advancement. This approach ensures employees are equipped with resources, mentorship, and guidance for success, including personal growth. 

How has Vodacom supported your career?

Throughout my 15+ years at Vodacom, I've experienced consistent support, fostering growth, learning, and development. Vodacom's commitment to advancement is evident through:

  • Diverse Roles: From Sales Support Agent to County Manager, the roles allowed me to expand my skills and knowledge.

What initiatives at Vodacom promote women's growth?

Vodacom's commitment to empowering women is evident through programs like "Women in Leadership," coaching, mentorship, rotations, and "Women Connect" sessions. These initiatives collectively nurture skills, leadership, and inclusivity, supporting women at all career stages.

What challenges and lessons have you encountered?

Throughout my career journey at Vodacom, I've encountered various challenges that have served as valuable learning experiences, contributing to my growth and development as a professional. As I transitioned into managerial roles, leading and managing teams presented its own set of challenges. Balancing individual strengths, fostering collaboration, and motivating team members while achieving organizational goals required a blend of leadership skills. I learned that successful leadership involves empowering others to excel.

Some of the professional lessons I've learned from these challenges include:

  • Resilience: Challenges are growth opportunities, and resilience is key to thriving amid adversity.
  • Communication: Clear communication and active listening are crucial for successful collaboration.
  • Learning: Continual learning, formal or experiential, enhances professional competence and confidence.
  • Diversity: Embracing diverse perspectives fosters innovation and enriches decision-making.
  • Leadership: Effective leadership involves empowering team members, trusting their abilities, and guiding them toward success.

Each challenge has provided lessons that have contributed to my resilience, adaptability, and leadership abilities. I am grateful for these experiences, as they have equipped me with skills that continue to serve me well in my current role and beyond.

What is your advice for women to grow and thrive at Vodacom or in business?

As someone who genuinely enjoys nurturing the growth of others, sharing knowledge, and fostering collaboration, my advice to fellow women aiming to thrive at Vodacom or in the business world would be centred on these key principles:

Embrace continuous learning and personal branding: Cultivating a strong personal brand is foundational. Identify your strengths, passions, and unique attributes. Then, leverage your personal brand to create a distinct identity that aligns with your professional goals. Simultaneously, remain committed to lifelong learning. Seek out opportunities to expand your skills and knowledge through workshops, courses, and mentorship programs.

Amplify your voice and empower others: Your passion for sharing and transferring knowledge is an invaluable asset. Utilize your voice to contribute to discussions, share insights, and drive meaningful conversations within your teams and the larger organization. Be an advocate for diversity and inclusion, encouraging varied perspectives and empowering colleagues to bring their unique strengths to the table.
