While everyone might be overwhelmed at this time, there are some things you can do in your daily life to reduce your own carbon footprint which can have a bigger, more positive impact on the environment. Here are some ideas for you to reduce your energy use, electricity bill and carbon footprint:

  • Plant indigenous plants and trees, which absorb carbon, support biodiversity and give us clean air to breathe

  • Switch to LED lights in your home, which is a great energy saver and will save on your electricity bill as well.

  • Invest in a solar geyser if you can, if you are unable to, you can switch off your geyser when not in use to save energy.

  • Waste less in every facet of your life – it is good for the environment and good for your pocket too.

  • Opt for at least one meat-free day in the week, plant-based foods are less harmful to the environment and are also good for your health

  • Only run full loads when using you washing machine or dishwasher to avoid multiple loads

  • Remember to unplug all plugs that are not in use including your laptop plug now that you are working from home

  • Make use of natural sun drying instead of turning on the tumble-dryer

  • Microwave reheat food quicker and with less energy than the oven or stovetop

  • Use a shower instead of a bath – this does not only save electricity but it also saves water
