What’s On Amazon Prime This May?

What are you watching on Amazon Prime this National Streaming Day?

20 May is National Streaming Day in the United States, and who are we to argue with that? As the weather in Southern Africa gets colder and the nights grow longer and darker, this is the perfect time of year to settle in, snuggle up and catch up on the latest streaming movies and series. Here’s a look at what’s trending on Amazon Prime this month.

G20

IMDB Rating: 5.1/10

It shouldn’t work, but it does. Oscar winner Viola Davis stars as the US President, who is in Cape Town for the G20 Summit when Antony Starr (Homelander from The Boys) and his band of terrorists take the world’s leaders hostage. Davis’s character goes full Die Hard, and the rest is… pretty much what you’d expect. It’s silly, but it’s loads of fun.

Reacher Season 3

IMDB Rating: 8/10

Real-life human tank Alan Ritchson returns as fictional human tank Jack Reacher for an action-packed third season. We won’t give too much of the plot away. Suffice it to say that if you enjoyed seasons 1 and 2, you’ll love this one. And if you missed seasons 1 and 2, you have some catching up to do. This series does great justice to Lee Child’s excellent novels.

You’re Cordially Invited

IMDB Rating: 5.5/10

Two weddings are double-booked (same day, same venue), and the father (Will Ferrell) of one bride and the sister (Reese Witherspoon) of the other go head-to-head to ensure the perfect day. It won’t win any Oscars, but it will keep you giggling.

Another Simple Favor

IMDB Rating: 5.3/10

The sequel to 2018’s wickedly entertaining A Simple Favor reunites Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively for another twisty-turny, double-crossy comedy thriller. This time, the frenemies are in Italy to solve (or, indeed, perpetrate) a murder.

House of David

IMDB Rating: 7.3/10

From the ridiculous… to the sublime. Even if you slept through Sunday School, you’ll know that the Holy Bible has some cracking stories – and the tale of King David is up there with the very best. House of David has epic production values and will reward faithful and general audiences alike.

Octopus!

IMDB Rating: 7.9/10

This two-part documentary movie shares the secret life of – you guessed it – an octopus. But My Octopus Teacher, this ain’t. This one dials up the humour, introducing you to human scientists, explorers and actors, along with many, many marine animals. Fleabag’s Phoebe Waller-Bridge provides narration.

The Not Very Grand Tour

IMDB Rating: 6.5/10

Loved The Grand Tour? Long for the old days, when Top Gear was must-watch TV? Fear not. The Not Very Grand Tour provides a Greatest Hits from The Grand Tour chaps, as Jeremy, James and Richard (by now you’ll be on first-name basis with them) celebrate the ever-loving glory of the internal combustion engine.

The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare

IMDB Rating: 6.8/10

It’s a Guy Ritchie film, so – as in Snatch, Sherlock Holmes, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., and The Gentlemen – you know what you’re in for: an entertaining, action-packed film that is high on style. This one tells the (not entirely) true story of a World War 2 special ops team.
