Data Protection 101: Keeping Your Information Safe on Lost Devices

Learn how to block a lost or stolen phone and protect your data with Find My Phone services and other proactive measures.

Losing your phone is stressful, especially with all your personal info on it. But relax – we have a user-friendly guide to protect your data.

Understanding Data Security

What Constitutes Personal Data?

Personal data is anything that can be used to identify you – name, address, phone number, and email. But that’s not all. Your devices also hold sensitive information like banking details, passwords, and personal photos. Knowing the types of data you have on your device is the first step in protecting it.

Preventative Measures

Set Up Device Locks and Passwords

Setting up a strong password or lock on your device is like putting a lock on your front door. Use a password that’s hard to guess – not the lazy stuff like ‘1234’ or ‘password’. Many devices also offer fingerprint or facial recognition options, adding an extra layer of security.

Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)

Two-factor authentication (2FA) is the second lock on your front door if someone gets through the first one. This usually means entering a code sent to your phone or email in addition to your password.

Find My Phone Services

What Is Find My Phone Functionality

What To Do When a Device Is Lost

When your phone is lost, you should first use the Find My Phone service to locate it. If it’s somewhere safe, you can retrieve it. If not, remotely lock the device to prevent anyone from accessing your data. You may also need to erase your data remotely to protect sensitive information.
