Currently serving as a Technology Assurance Senior Specialist in the Technology Strategy Planning, Architecture, and Assurance division at Vodacom, Dr. Khensani Xivuri's journey from growing up in Peninghotsa village in Malamulele, Limpopo to recently being the first black woman at the University of Johannesburg to graduate with her PhD in Applied Data Science. She is a testament to the transformative power of education and self-investment. We spoke to Khensani to find out more about her journey, and what she has planned next.
What motivated your decision to pursue a PhD in Applied Data Science?
I was drawn to pursuing a PhD in a field that was current, relevant and would be impactful. At the time all organisations were starting to use AI, and there was also a lot of noise around the bias in AI, which links to my background in technology governance, audit and assurance. This led me to focus my research on the ethical considerations and fairness surrounding AI. Hence, I embarked on a PhD journey in Applied Data Science.
How do you define the significance of studying and honing skills from your perspective?
Continuous self-development is crucial. I firmly believe in the power of education and recognise its profound importance and the benefits it brings. Hailing from a deeply rural area like mine, education has been transformative in my life, solidifying my belief in its value. Vodacom has played a significant role in my pursuit of a PhD by funding my studies over the past two years. Additionally, my manager has been exceptionally supportive, motivating for my funding and consistently accommodating my leave requests.
Reflecting on your PhD experience, what are the key insights or lessons you've gained?
That I can achieve whatever I put my mind to, and the importance of surrounding yourself with people that support and believe in you.
Why do you believe it's crucial for women to invest in themselves?
The greatest favour we can do for ourselves as women is to prioritise self-investment and self-development. Given the existing marginalisations, focusing on areas within our control, such as getting an education, is crucial. This way, we eliminate the excuse of lacking qualifications when opportunities arise.
In what ways would you inspire fellow Vodacom colleagues to explore avenues for personal and professional growth?
With the internal bursary and support available, there's truly no excuse for individuals not to invest in their own development. Also, times are evolving, and we need to make sure that we stay relevant through upskilling ourselves and getting the relevant skills.
How do you perceive innovation, both within Vodacom and in broader contexts?
Technology innovations are now a part of our everyday lives, and they are here to make our lives easier, but it is also important that we ensure that we have the effective controls to harness their benefits while safeguarding society from the potential risks. Ethical development of these technologies is imperative to achieve this balance.
We know that Vodacom has been ranked as South Africa's number one employer, but did Vodacom foster an environment that empowered you to pursue your expertise and thrive in your field, particularly with your PhD pursuit?
Being part of an innovative company like Vodacom naturally encourages a desire to learn about new technologies. AI stands out as a critical digital skill, making my research in AI ethics and fairness essential for both my personal growth and alignment with the organisation's direction. The funding provided and my supportive leader who prioritises her team’s development also empowered me significantly on this journey.
How will you use your Applied Data Science qualification to leave a bigger impact on our country and society as a whole? What are the big plans?
My focus would be getting involved in AI adoption, strategy development, ethics, and governance, and ensuring that as we build and implement AI, we establish effective controls that safeguard society from any potential risks.
