Get fit in a few minutes a day

STEVE BLUES breaks a sweat as he gets to grips with the 7 Minute Workout app.

Those of you who bounce out of bed every Friday morning knowing you’ll get to read my latest app review will recall last week’s appraisal of Photoshop Express. I attempted to use it to manipulate images of my well-fed belly so it would look like Ryan Goslings’ six-pack abs and I could win a bet. But it soon became apparent that the only real fix for a wobbly paunch is exercise and diet. Damn it.

So little time, so much to do

Diet is no longer a problem as my wife laid down the law, quite forcefully I might add, when she read last week’s review. But fitting the right amount of exercise into my furiously busy schedule of sitting at my desk and lying on my couch wasn’t going to be easy. That is until my beloved insisted I download the Johnson & Johnson Official 7 Minute Workout App as all you need to get enough daily exercise is a chair, 7 minutes and a significant other sternly ensuring you don’t cheat.

But wait, there’s more!

Despite having the words “7 Minute Workout” in its name, the app caters well beyond that initial few minutes of exercise that gets you off the couch. A fact I was less than thrilled about when my eagle-eyed wife pointed out I could also do any of the other preset workouts in the extensive Workout Library, including a 21 Minute Cardio Blast which made me wonder if she hadn’t recently increased my life insurance policy.

It's science, you big baby

Once I stopped sulking and actually started exercising it soon became apparent that this is not just some fanciful exercise app that’s big on promises and low on delivery until you make a lot of in-app purchases. It was designed by Chris Jordan, the director of exercise physiology at the Human Performance Institute in Orlando Florida, and is recognised as a fast and efficient way to burn fat without having to buy expensive equipment or get yourself a gym contract. I’ve been at it under the watchful eye of my better half for about a week now and, while I’ll never be one of those people who love fitness and exercise, I am feeling a lot better about myself now there’s slightly less of my gut to wobble than when I started.
