You don't have to be a cellphone nut to join Vodacom - there are plenty of career paths you may not even have thought of! We chat to Edwina Pillay, one of Vodacom's librarians who keeps her colleagues up to date with the latest information.

What does your job entail?

My title is Specialist Librarian, Vodacom Digital Library (Strategy and Research, BI Group). The Vodacom Digital Library offers access to information and data to all Vodacom staff. Part of my job is providing a reference and research service to staff.  I also oversee the publication of newsletters and weekly alerting services offered by the Library.  I am responsible for compiling a weekly industry reports newsletter including content that meet the strategic objectives of the company.

What did you study and how did you join Vodacom?

I completed a BTech Degree in Library and Information Studies from CPUT (then Cape Technikon).  While working as a contractor at the South African Library (then the National Library), I heard that Vodacom was looking to employ an assistant librarian. I contacted Jill Schilder who had started the Vodacom Library six months before and arranged for an interview. My interview was successful and I was employed as a temp for six months. I was offered a permanent contract in January 1999 and almost 20 years later, I’m still working with Jill, who manages the Vodacom Digital Library.

What has your experience been like working at Vodacom?

I’ve been with Vodacom since 1999. Vodacom was my first permanent job after studying. Working at Vodacom has presented me with many opportunities to learn and grow, not only in my job, but also personally. It has been an amazing journey and I’m really excited to be part of the digital transformation the company is currently going through.

What excites you about working for Vodacom?

I really love my job and the satisfaction that it brings. I also really like the people with whom I work. We share the same enthusiasm for the profession and for information provision. We receive requests for information on a diverse range of topics across the industry, which makes this work really interesting and exciting. It affords the opportunity of continuous learning and exploring different areas of the business.  We also interact with staff from all areas in the company.

What would you say to someone thinking of joining Vodacom?

Go for it! Vodacom offers many opportunities. It’s a great company to work for. The Future is Exciting, Ready?
