Scorching playlists

Some of our favourite playlists on Deezer to make your summer even hotter

No matter where you are or what you're doing, summer is the time to Play Every Day. With our pick of the best playlists on Deezer, who knows - you may even discover a new soundtrack for your summer. (To stream the playlists below, register with Deezer and get two months' free subscription as a Vodacom customer - and then pay only R59.99 per month for access to over 40 million tracks, from anywhere, on any device.)

For road-tripping

The Stranger Things soundtrack

What better way to take a trip to the upside-down while you travel to your holiday spot than with a soundtrack of the Netflix instant-cult-classic sci-fi series Stranger Things? It's not as creepy as you'd imagine - except for the odd instrumental, trippy track, it's full of 80s classics that any Gen Y will remember and love. Of course, if you've seen the show, the Clash's 'Should I Stay Or Should I Go' will probably give you chills, but if you haven't, you'll be golden ... As golden as some of the more upbeat oldies on the playlist, like Foreigner's 'Waiting For A Girl Like You', the Bangles' 'Hazy Shade of Winter' and the cheesiest song about Africa ever written by a band that had never set foot on the continent - Toto, of course.

For exercising

Indie Workout

Let the White Stripes, Foster the People, the Strokes, Interpol, the Killers and a long list of other producers of Indie classics get you moving this summer. With a whopping 60 tracks, you won't hear anything repeated (unless you're running a marathon, maybe), and there's nothing intimidatingly cutting-edge on this playlist to make you feel old or out of touch, either. These tracks are all high-octane and pumping with energy, so you won't be able to help but hit the track/park/treadmill/road.

For a local-is-lekker party

Rock 'n Jol

To keep things kief, stream this playlist of South Africa's top rock tracks, mixed with the best of the international rock scene. Think current stars like Sannie Fox, Taxi Violence, aKing and Zebra and Giraffe interspersed with classic SA rockers like Hog Hoggidy Hog and Fuzigish, and the odd Kings of Leon, Bloc Party and the Plastics tunes. With 42 songs adding up to a play time of about two-and-a-half hours, this playlist will get your party started with some tracks to spare.

For reuniting with family

Jiva Jazz

The best thing about our South African summer is that it tends to attract family from far-flung places, where they're at the mercy of deep, dark winters. With this playlist featuring the greats of the flourishing and historically celebrated SA jazz scene, you'll make them feel right at home. And relatives of all ages will find it both soothing and inspiring. All the usual suspects are present and accounted for (Hugh Masekela, Kyle Shepherd, Abdullah Ibrahim, Basil 'Manenberg' Coetzee and African Jazz Pioneers), but there are some lesser-known gems on the list too (we're talking to regular folk, not jazz aficionados, here), including Skyf, Batsumi and Faca Kulu.
