Star Wars day: May the 4th be with you

With the success of Rogue One last year and the December release of The Last Jedi, Star Wars is bigger than ever.

The 4th of May has become the unofficial 'Star Wars day', a celebration of all things that took place a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.

But it's not just the movies that have captured the imagination of generation after generation. There's a whole ecosystem of Star Wars related content, from cartoons, books, games and apps. Let's take a look at some of the best Star Wars media to enjoy on your smartphone or tablet.

Games

Knights of the Old Republic

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic isn’t just one of the best games on a mobile device, it’s one of the best games ever made. Staying true to the Star Wars name and franchise, this game takes you right into the Star Wars universe thousands of years before the movies take place. Best enjoyed on a tablet, it’s a deep, rewarding role playing game with freedom to plot your own party and path.

Available for iOS and Android

Star Wars: Angry Birds

Easily one of the best Angry Birds crossovers, Angry Birds Star Wars is one of those time sinks that can easily take over every last iota of free time. With Angry Birds Star Wars II you get all the familiar fun of the physics-based gameplay but with cool Star Wars themed abilities for your birds, and you can even play as the Light Side or the Dark Side (the Pork Side).

Available for iOS and Android

Lego Star Wars

Lego Star Wars stands as out as one of the highest quality and totally free games on this list. The Lego Star Wars games are as polished as the film series and offer another playable way into the franchise for children. Players make their way through familiar scenes from the films but reimaged as lego versions. It’s a sprawling game with masses of characters and missions to explore.

Available for iOS and Android

Star Wars: Galaxy of Heros

Galaxy Of Heroes tasks you with collecting different characters from the movies (The Force Awakens included) and putting them into team-based battles. Fun to play, beautifully animated, but the game can be a little too reliant on microtransaction at times.

Available for iOS and Android

Apps

Star Wars Official app

Whether you're a recent convert to Star Wars or a veteran fan looking to top up their lore, the Official Star Wars App is your ideal saga companion. Synced up to the official info archive at starwars.com, you can also use it to keep up to date on the latest news and updates direct from Disney and Lucasfilm. The app also contains loads of other fun stuff, like Star Wars themed GIFs and emoji, and a cool little Force Trainer game.

Available for iOS and Android

QuizUp

QuizUp is loads of fun. Granted it’s not really a “Star Wars,” app, but within the app it has a specific Star Wars section where you can compete against other people to test your knowledge of the Star Wars universe. Not only does this help you feel accomplished when you crush others with your Star Wars expertise, but it’s a load of fun and can even be challenging at times.

Available for iOS and Android

Jedi Lightsaber

Anyone who has seen any of the movies knows the thrill that accompanies a lightsaber being drawn. This app lets you relive the experience and even allows you to 'duel' other smartphones. While the novelty may wear off pretty quickly, it's still a fun app to pull out every now and then.
