The need for speed

A fibre internet connection has the power to change the way you work, play and live while also saving you money. Here’s how it works.

Fibre optics networks are gradually making their way to the streets, pavements and boundary walls of South African neighbourhoods. Why should you be paying attention? Because fibre internet offers super high-speed connectivity at affordable rates and with unprecedented reliability.

Whether you want to stream the latest series and movies to your computer or TV, keep your teenagers’ Snapchat habits from racking up sizeable data bills, save money on phone calls or Skype in HD with family and friends abroad, or turn your home into a smart home, fibre is the way to go.

Picking a package

The first thing to do if you want to get Vodacom Fibre is to check whether it’s available in your area. To do that, head over to Vodacom’s coverage map here. If it’s on offer in your neighbourhood, the next thing to figure out is what sort of package to go for.

Vodacom Fibre offers speeds between 4Mbit/s right up to 100Mbit/s. If you’re planning to stream HD video, whether on YouTube or via a streaming service like Showmax, you’re going to want at least a 10Mbit/s connection. And though it’s tempting to go for uncapped, you may be able to get by with a capped account, especially if you live alone or with a partner.

Also, if you reach your monthly data cap you can buy once-off bundles, just like you would for your cellphone. Of course, if you’re a video editor who uploads and downloads massive files – or there’s a teenager in your house – uncapped might well be the easiest option.

Faster is better

Once you’ve got fibre, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without it. Imagine YouTube that doesn’t buffer, uploads and downloads that take minutes instead of hours, and app updates that happen in the blink of an eye. Now imagine using that connectivity to check in on a camera feed from your front door, or check the contents of your smart fridge.

You may not have smart home equipment now, but if you do buy some down the line your fibre connection will ensure you can get the most out of it. Plus, if you choose a plan that include calls, you can cut your phone bill by using your fibre for voice-over IP (VOIP) calls. You can even add your Showmax subscription fee to your Vodacom Fibre bill to give you one less bill to worry about, and ensure there’s always something worth watching on TV.

If having super fast internet and cheap calls isn't enough incentive, having fibre installed could add to the value of your home if you decide to sell down the line. You’ll wonder how you ever lived without it.
