Review: Huawei P10 and P10 Plus

You could be the first to dazzle with Huawei's new flagship devices by pre-ordering yours on Vodacom Online. Here's why you should.

Huawei has once again raised their game with their new flagship smartphones, the P10 and P10 Plus. With groundbreaking, one-of-a-kind camera technology, super-fast charging, an intelligent memory, and, let's not forget, a truly unique and dazzling design, the P10 and P10 Plus are the smartphones to be reckoned with this year.

What's even better than being one of the first people in the country to call the P10 or P10 Plus your own? Getting fab freebies (Huawei Watch 2, anybody?) and standing a chance to be the face of the Huawei P10 campaign by entering our Best Cover Shot competition.

But first, here are the stand-out features that set the P10 and P10 Plus apart.

The groundbreaking camera(s)

Once again, Huawei has partnered with Leica to engineer the P10's dual-camera technology, which we first saw in the P9 series. But they've taken smartphone cameras to a whole new level with the P10 and P10 Plus, which give users the most innovative imagery tools in the game. You'll be able to capture your moments and tell your stories more clearly, with more focus and so much more beauty than ever before.

The world's most advanced selfie camera

For the first time ever on a smartphone, Huawei co-engineered the front camera of the P10 and P10 Plus with Leica. The result? An 8MP selfie camera that captures twice as much light, meaning you'll get stunning selfies – day or night!

The camera can even sense when there's more than one of you and will switch to wide-angle shots automatically to accommodate 'groufies'.

Perfect portraiture

With the P10 and P10 Plus, you've got a portrait studio in your pocket. The new rear Leica Dual Camera 2.0 uses precise 3D facial detection, studio-like relighting, a 2x hybrid zoom with auto precise focusing, dynamic illumination and natural portrait enhancements to produce stunning artistic portrait shots. Eyes in particular are enhanced, with optical technology that brings out their natural brightness and colour.

Huawei invested heavily in the research for these enhanced portrait effects. The P10 and P10 Plus come with a smart image algorithm that detects and analyses face shape, the relative space between features and the uniqueness of skin type. This allows the camera to apply portrait enhancements in a customised, more natural way.

Quite simply, with the P10 and P10 Plus, you'll change the way the world sees you.

Magnificent night shots

With the dual camera's Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS) solution and the industry's first camera pixel binning technology, both of which reduce motion blur and 'noise', you'll capture superior night shots.

A natural bokeh effect

The 'bokeh' effect in portrait photography is that pleasing, soft blur you get on out-of-focus or background parts of an image when you use a wide-aperture lens. The Leica Dual Camera 2.0 on the P10 and P10 Plus enables wide aperture photography, so you'll end up with stunning artistic portraits with the desirable, natural bokeh effect.

You'll even get this effect when you shoot in monochrome (or black and white), with the camera's 12MP monochrome sensor.

Super-fast charging with Huawei's SuperCharge

The Huawei P10's high-density 3 200 mAH battery and the P10 Plus's high-density 3 750 mAH battery both support Huawei's SuperCharge technology. All you'll need is 30 minutes of charging to get a full day's use. As the charging is done at a low voltage and at a low temperature with a 5-gate protection mechanism, charging is not only fast - it's also safe.

Dazzling design

The P10 and P10 Plus are ultra-slim, at only 6.98mm thick, and they feature an industry first - a hyper diamond-cut finish that enhances brightness and makes the phones a pleasure to hold. They also boast high gloss and sand-blast finishes. It's all about clean lines, smooth curves and a minimalistic design with these devices - even the fingerprint sensors are now hidden beneath the front screen glass, and the camera modules are flush with the back cover.

They'll also turn you into a style icon with their brand-new, bold colours, which Huawei partnered with the PANTONE Colour Institute to secure. The P10 Plus will be available through Vodacom in Graphite Black while the P10 will come in Mystic Silver, Graphite Black, Prestige Gold, and exclusive to Vodacom, Dazzling Blue.

Intelligent memory

Thanks to Huawei's Ultra Memory, the P10 and P10 Plus's speed and response time have been drastically improved. Memory is reserved for the apps you love and use the most, with memory constantly being recycled and compressed, which makes the P10 and P10 Plus faster, more nimble and better able to cope with your multitasking, as the apps you use the most load more speedily than ever.

The ultra-fast Kirin 960 processor also keeps the performance of the P10 and P10 Plus right up there with the most advanced smartphones on the market.
