Big screen experience
The iPhone 6 has a 4.7-inch screen (0.7 inches bigger than the 5s), and the iPhone 6 Plus has a whopping 5.5 inches. All the better to enjoy that famous Retina HD display from Apple!
Look and feel
Before walking you through what’s inside the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, let’s talk look and feel. The first thing you’ll notice is that it’s thinner (at 6.9mm and 7.1mm respectively), and feels completely different to previous models. This is largely due to the new style of casing with its rounded corners.
Fast and powerful
Both of the smartphones are packing the new 64-bit A8 chip, paired with the M8 motion coprocessor, a processor structure that is unique to Apple. Basically the M8 chip does a lot of the grunt work, leaving the powerful A8 free to give you blistering fast computing power in the palm of your hand. It does just that: flicking between apps, email and the camera on the iPhone 6 is a seamless experience – and very fast!
Improved camera
The camera is the same in both models of the iPhone 6, with an 8MP iSight camera (with those megapixels actually being large 1.5-micron pixels) and ƒ/2.2 aperture.
Better video recording
You can now capture clips at 1080p HD at 60 fps (frames per second), and there is a supercool slo-mo option that films at 240fps. And if you are a fan of Instagram’s new Hyperlapse function, you’ll probably be tickled to know there is now also a time-lapse video setting with the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.
New operating system
Then there is iOS 8, the operating platform that is preloaded on the iPhone 6 range. It’s beautiful.
Battery life
The A8 chip is more energy efficient, which means there is a chance that you might not have to plug your iPhone 6 back into your charger before 5pm every day. Battery life does seem to be improved indeed.
Connectivity
Apple has also launched a NFC (near field communications) service called Apple Pay with the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus – meaning you can pay with your phone instead of your card – but this won’t be available in South Africa in the foreseeable future. It’s still an exciting development, though!
Verdict
Both the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are the ultimate smartphone for Apple fans and new fans alike.
