As South Africa’s Top Employer for 2026, Vodacom’s goal is to empower its employees and Zainaaz Hansa is living proof. This is her story.
Currently working in the DevSecOps space as a Cyber Discover Graduate at Vodacom South Africa, Hansa has had a full circle journey with Vodacom – from being a part of Code Like a Girl, receiving Vodacom bursaries in high school and university to now being part of the Discover Graduate Programme. She shares her journey, her love for the tech industry and Vodacom’s role in helping her achieve her career dreams as well as where she would like her career to go.
Tell us about where your enthusiasm for tech comes from?
I grew up in a family that deeply values education, resilience and hard work. From a young age, I was endlessly curious, especially about how things worked in the world of technology. That curiosity, combined with a drive to challenge myself academically, led me to participate in programmes and opportunities that exposed me to innovation, leadership, and problem solving.
Those early experiences shaped the foundation for what would eventually become my journey with Vodacom.
What were your career goals when you were in high school?
Back in high school, I knew I wanted to pursue a career in technology, even though I didn’t yet know which specific area I would eventually specialise in. What I knew was that I wanted to be in a space that was innovative, meaningful, and constantly evolving.
I wanted to use technology to solve real problems, and I wanted my journey to inspire other young people, especially young women, to believe that they belong in STEM.
Were you dabbling in tech at all during this time?
At 16 years old, I earned my Google Play developer license and used my skills to develop a mobile app that provided access to past exam papers. I had noticed how many of my classmates struggled to find study resources, so I built a solution myself. Even though that app is no longer live today, the experience was a turning point for me.
It showed me the kind of impact technology could have, and it confirmed that identifying a need and building something meaningful was exactly what I wanted to do with my life.
How did your journey with Vodacom come about?
It began in high school when I participated in the Code Like a Girl programme. Winning the programme’s competition in 2021 was a defining moment for me. Vodacom recognised my potential and offered to support my university education through their bursary programme. What started off as a one week learning opportunity turned into a life changing pathway that opened doors I never imagined possible.
What did you study at university with the Vodacom Bursary?
I completed a BSc in Information Technology, followed by a BSc Honours in Computer Science and IT degree at North West University. Through this journey I developed strong foundations in Software development, Data analysis, Cybersecurity, Systems design, Artificial Intelligence.
What impact did the bursary have on you?
For me personally, the bursary meant I could focus entirely on my studies without the fear of financial pressure.
Looking back, I realise the privilege the bursary gave me. It was the privilege of not having to work multiple jobs while studying, of writing exams on a full stomach due to meal allowances, the privilege of safe, stable accommodation and the privilege of being given platforms to use my voice for good and nurtured my confidence long before I fully believed in myself.
And how did it affect your family?
Receiving the Vodacom bursary had a truly profound impact on my family. In 2020, at the height of COVID 19, my dad was retrenched and my mom’s company was undergoing restructuring. During my matric year, we had difficult and realistic conversations about more affordable study options, including the possibility of studying part time while working.
When I received the bursary after my preliminary exams, it lifted an enormous weight off my family’s shoulders.
Tell us about the Code Like A Girl programme – how was your time on it and what skills did you learn?
The programme is designed to introduce young women to coding, digital innovation and the wider world of technology. Over the one-week course, we were taught the fundamentals of web development, problem solving and how to use technology to create practical, real-world solutions.
At the end of the week, we were challenged to build a web app of our choice using everything we had learned, which pushed me to apply my skills in a real and meaningful way.

How did it feel being a part of the programme?
I participated in 2021, and I remember feeling anxious at the beginning. Many of us came from different backgrounds, and there were girls who had never even used a laptop before. But the mentors were incredibly patient and intentional about making the space accessible for everyone.
What stood out most for me was how liberating the experience felt. Being in a girl only space allowed us to let our guard down, to ask questions freely, to express ourselves without fear of judgement, and to learn without the pressure of “proving” ourselves in a male dominated setting.
What was the biggest lesson you learned during the programme?
I realised how powerful it is when women support one another. I saw the diversity among the participants, yet also how similar our dreams were. We bonded over our shared passion for STEM and the challenges we had each faced.
Beyond the technical skills, Code Like a Girl gave me something far more valuable: confidence. It pushed me outside my comfort zone, taught me to trust my abilities, and helped me truly believe that women belong in technology.
You’re currently a part of the Discover Graduate Programme – explain this?
The Discover Graduate Programme is Vodacom’s development initiative for young graduates transitioning into the workforce.
It provides practical, hands-on project experience, exposure to industry experts, technical and leadership development and opportunities to contribute to meaningful organisational work.
What advice do you have for other young people who have dreams and goals but don’t have the means to pursue those goals?
Don’t let your circumstances define your future. There are so many opportunities available such as bursaries, scholarships, online courses, development programmes, but you have to put yourself out there and apply for them.
For me personally, platforms like LinkedIn played a huge role. Many of the opportunities I received came from making my presence known, reaching out to people, asking questions, and showing genuine curiosity.
Take every opportunity you can, network with people who inspire you, stay curious, and never stop believing in your own potential. One opportunity — just one — can change the entire trajectory of your life.
From a bursary to now working for the company – what can you tell people about Vodacom, based on your experience?
What stands out most to me is Vodacom’s culture. It’s progressive, inclusive and genuinely committed to developing young talent. Even as a young graduate, I feel heard, valued, and empowered to contribute meaningfully.
My journey, from bursary student to employee, is proof that Vodacom doesn’t just speak about developing youth potential; they invest in it, nurture it and champion it.
Where do you see yourself going or what do you see yourself doing when you complete the Discover Graduate Programme?
After completing the programme, I see myself continuing to grow within cybersecurity. I want to deepen my expertise, contribute to building resilient digital systems, and work on solutions that protect both organisations and communities.
I also see myself pursuing an MBA, not just to become a manager, but to become a strong, authentic, people centered leader.
Most importantly, I want to give back. I hope to return to programmes like Code Like a Girl, visit schools, and inspire young women to pursue careers in technology, just as others once inspired me.
How grateful are you to Vodacom for being with you throughout your journey?
I am deeply grateful to Vodacom. They didn’t just fund my education: they believed in me long before I fully believed in myself. Vodacom has been a constant and supportive force in my journey and have given me a sense of belonging, family, and a platform where my voice and potential are valued. Their investment in me has shaped my confidence, my career, and the person I am becoming.
