A network that keeps you connected everywhere

Copied!

Stay connected everywhere with Vodacom’s network that automatically switches between 5G, 4G, and 3G to keep you online – even in rural areas. Port your number and never miss a moment again.

You’re on a road trip in the middle of nowhere and your signal vanishes right when you need it. Or you’re a student in a rural village, watching a deadline slip away. Fishermen, farmers, road-trippers or people simply trying to reach their banking app – we’ve all felt that annoying drop.

But as a Vodacom customer, you’ll stay connected in more of those moments, even in some of South Africa’s most remote areas.

Why does my phone sometimes switch between 5G, 4G, and 3G?

Your phone is constantly measuring signal strength from nearby towers, even when you’re not using it. When it detects that the signal from your current tower is getting weaker, it looks for a better option nearby.

How the switch happens:

  • Your phone continuously monitors signal quality from all surrounding towers and reports this back to the network.
  • When the signal drops below a certain threshold, the network decides it’s time to switch.
  • The network finds the best available option. This could be another tower on the same generation (e.g., 4G to 4G), or a different generation entirely, (e.g., 5G to 4G, or 4G to 3G).
  • The switch (“fallback”) happens in milliseconds – so fast that your call or download continues without dropping.

Does generation switching only happen when I’m in a remote area?

Vodacom’s network automatically switches to 4G and 3G networks when you enter remote or rural areas where 5G coverage is unavailable.

Even in urban environments, faster signals like 5G don’t travel as far or penetrate buildings as effectively as lower-frequency signals like 4G and 3G. So, when you move into a weaker coverage area, your phone steps down to the generation that can still reach you.

Your phone always tries to connect to the fastest available signal – 5G first, then 4G, then 3G as a fallback.

Do I have to do anything?

You don’t have to do anything when you’re in a weaker coverage area.

Your phone and the Vodacom network work together behind the scenes to keep you connected, automatically choosing the best available signal at any given moment. This ensures your calls, texts, and data still work seamlessly when you travel outside of major cities.

The handover between generations happens in the background, without you noticing, so no dropped calls, and no manual switching.

What if I’m not yet a Vodacom customer?

You’ve probably had your number for years. Your contacts know it by heart. Your bank has it. Your family has it. Why change it? You don’t have to. Port your number to Vodacom and keep everything that matters – while gaining a network that adapts to keep you connected wherever you go.

Same number. New network. Better signal. Make the switch.
