People have been getting really excited about Huawei’s new P20 family of devices. The big daddy P20 Pro may have amazing headline-grabbing features like the triple-lens Leica camera (and it IS amazing) but we’d like to make the case that the baby of the family, the P20 lite, is just as impressive. Because with this device, you get amazing, headline-grabbing value.
Here’s what we love about this budget-friendly cellphone.
Unlike some lite versions of smartphones, the P20 lite sports a very similar design to the standard P20. In fact, it’s a tiny bit larger: 5.84” to the P20’s 5.8”.
The colour options are great too - the standout is, of course, Klein Blue, which is exclusive to Vodacom. Art history buffs will know that Klein Blue is the intense blue hue developed by French artist Yves Klein in 1960 and used in many of his works. (Fun fact: Eddie Redmayne wrote his thesis on Klein Blue when he studied art history at Cambridge.)
Huawei is well known for its camera technology, and the P20 lite punches well above its price point in this regard. On the rear, you get a 16MP+2MP dual camera that allows you to choose how blurred or sharp you want your background (known as the bokeh effect), and also produces wide-angled photos.
On the front you get another 16MP camera. Not so long ago, selfie cams were a couple of megapixels at best, an afterthought in smartphone tech. No more. Light fusion technology makes for lighter, brighter and more beautiful self-portraits.
Plus, you can add a bunch of fun augmented reality stickers and effects to your pics.
The Huawei P20 lite compares extremely well with other mid-range phones, boasting an octa-core processor, the HiSilicon Kirin 659. It runs on Android’s latest OS, Oreo. All this means that, unless you’re a hectic gamer running intensive applications, you’ll be more than happy with the speed and smoothness of this cellphone.
The P20 lite also has 4GB RAM which is as much as many flagship devices.
The P20 lite features facial recognition - and it even works when you’re in a dark place. (But, cleverly, won't work if you're asleep and someone holds your phone up to your face.) The fingerprint sensor is on the back on the phone, nicely positioned for how you would naturally hold the phone. These features aren’t common on a mid-range handset, so it’s really nice to see them here.
With contracts starting from just R299 per month on the Vodacom website (correct at time of publication), the Huawei P20 Lite represents phenomenal value considering it’s excellent features.
