You don’t have to leave your home to have an amazing break this festive season. These tech tools can help make it the best staycation ever.

Be a tourist in your own city

VoiceMap tours is a proudly South African app that's found success and gone global. There are several local tours to choose from, including the usual suspects like Cape Town and Joburg, but also guided tours of the Overberg, Hermanus, PE and more. Some tours are free, and some more specialised tours incur a small charge. Download the app for iOS or Android, and listen to the informative and fun tours while you wander around your hood.

Have some special family time

Adventure Clubs operates in several cities around the world, including Cape Town, Pretoria and Joburg. By downloading the app and selecting your location, you’ll be kept up to date of some awesome, unusual activities you can join. You could be going behind the scenes with the Philharmonic Orchestra or visiting a botanical garden. There are tons of activities to choose from. App is available for iOS and Android.

Follow in Mandela’s footsteps

Madiba’s Journey is a great app for history buffs. It shows key places in the life of Nelson Mandela, from Parliament in Cape Town to Constitution Hill in Joburg, and gives you the story behind them. There’s text, audio and image galleries. You can build an itinerary based on the over 100 tourist attractions included, or just dip in and out as you travel.

Ask the experts

You probably have a dog-eared copy of a Lonely Planet somewhere in your house. It was your invaluable bible to London or Paris, or South-East Asia. Now, Guides by Lonely Planet takes things into the 21st-century with their online guides. It includes guides to over 200 cities, including major spots in South Africa, and includes advices on places to eat and stay, and what to see. Available for iOS and Android.

Stay entertained
