At Samsung’s second major Unpacked event for the year, the Z Series took centre stage, with two new devices being unveiled: Galaxy Z Fold3 5G and Galaxy Z Flip3 5G. We got a sneak peek of the handsets and they do feel premium and sturdy in the hand. They’re built with Armor Frame, the strongest aluminium to be used on Galaxy devices, and the toughest Corning Gorilla Glass Victus to protect them against scratches and accidental drops.
Samsung has reworked the protective top layer that’s made from stretchable film, with optimised display panel layers providing 80% more durability compared to the Fold2.
Both devices feature Samsung’s Hideaway Hinge (introduced on the Z Flip), which keeps them locked in multiples angles, called Flex Mode. It also repels dust and other particles. After strenuous tests, Samsung says the devices can withstand 200 000 folds.
Galaxy Z Fold3 5G
The Galaxy Z Fold3 is regarded as the ultimate productivity and entertainment device and its first foldable with S Pen support. It has a 7.6-inch display when opened, and a sleek 6.2-inch when closed. The full 7.6-inch can be enjoyed uninterrupted thanks to its new under-display camera technology. It also has a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate and a 4 400mah battery that supports fast charging and fast wireless charging. Cameras include a 12MP triple rear, 10MP selfie, and 4MP under-display cam.
The S Pen offers various ways to multitask. Tune into video meetings or watch YouTube videos on the top screen while taking notes on the bottom, or check email and to-do lists at once. Multi-Active Window lets you open three apps at once and create a shortcut to open them together. The S Pen has two models: S Pen Fold Edition and S Pen Pro. The Z Fold3 colour choices are Phantom Green, Black and Silver, and all come with 8GB of RAM and 128/256GB storage.
Galaxy Z Flip3 5G
The dinky fashion-forward Galaxy Z Flip3 is aimed at those who want a trendy device with premium features. It’s available in Cream, Green, Lavender and Phantom Black. It has a 6.7-inch main screen with a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate and features a larger 1.9-inch cover screen. The little display supports widgets and can be used to access messages, email, weather, step count and Samsung Pay without having to open it unnecessarily.
The cover display also lets you take selfies and record videos. Cameras include a 12MP dual rear and 10MP selfie cam. The Z Flip3 has a 3 300mah battery with fast and wireless charging. It comes with 8GB of RAM and 128/256GB of storage.
Alongside the new Z Series, Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Buds2 and the Galaxy Watch4 and Watch4 Classic, powered by Wear OS.
