Samsung has unveiled its new flagship Galaxy S Series with an unsurprising revival of the Note, given the leaks and rumours. A trio of devices were announced at Unpacked 2022: the premium S22+ and smaller S22, alongside the top-of-the-range S22 Ultra.
But what stands out in the 6.8-inch S22 Ultra is the merging of the best of the S Series, such as performance and pro-grade cameras with the Note’s S-Pen and productivity tools. The S22 Ultra features a built-in S-Pen stylus, regarded as the fastest and most responsive with a 2.9ms latency (previously 9ms); a new advanced camera with Nightography features that apply to video too; and a long-lasting battery. The S22 Ultra is regarded as the most powerful Ultra device in the industry. Samsung president TM Roh says, “It’s a leap forward for mobile technology, setting a new standard for what a smartphone can be.”
The S-Pen has a more natural feel when scribbling handwritten notes, all of which convert digitally to text files, and lets you explore apps in new ways. These include a “quick note” feature in the form of a pop-up from anywhere to share multimedia-rich content, and a “collaboration view” that lets you use Tab S8 seamlessly alongside the S22 Ultra.
The quad-camera on the S22 Ultra is comprised of a 108MP main shooter with 100x Space Zoom, 12MP ultra-wide, and a 10MP telephoto with 3x optical zoom alongside another 10MP telephoto lens. It has a 40MP selfie-cam with a wide field of view for group shots.
It features Samsung’s largest sensor, which allows for more light to enter for better low-light shots. These advancements are called Nightography, which is smart enough to choose the right frame rate to capture more detail and light. The S22 Ultra features 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage; a large 5000mAh battery; NFC, 5G connectivity; Ultra-wideband; and Wi-Fi 6.
New year, new look
The S Series line-up includes the premium 6.6-inch S22+ and 6.1-inch S22 that have upgraded cameras with intelligent image processing. It’s been bumped up to 50MP main shooters, when compared to last year’s 12MP on the S21+ and S21, with 23% larger sensors. It also has 10MP telephoto and 12MP ultra-wide lenses, complemented by a 10MP selfie-camera.
The same Nightography mode is available that uses more light to capture, as well as Adaptive Pixel technology to make colour pop, even in the dark.
The S22+ has a larger 4500mAh battery and connectivity options include ultra-wide band support and WiFi 6E. The S22 has a 3700mAh battery and supports WiFi 6. The S22 Ultra, S22+ and S22 are all powered by a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip – a first for the South African market. They also boast 120Hz screens and are IP68 water resistant.
