OPPO Reno12 Pro 5G with AI Review

The OPPO Reno12 Pro 5G is packed with AI features, let’s take a closer look at how it works.

GenAI is the latest buzzword in the smartphone world, and it’s no surprise that most handsets in 2024 have some sort of AI built-in.

The new OPPO Reno12 Pro 5G is one of them, and we’ve had an opportunity to play around with it.

The OPPO Reno12 Pro 5G, on a surface level is a slim, well-designed handset that fits comfortably in your hand. At 6.7-inches it’s on the large side and weighs around 181g while packing an impressive 120Hz, FHD display (2412x1080).

OPPO did a good job with the specs on the hardware front: it is powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 7300 chipset, with 24GB of RAM and 512GB of expandable storage. It has a 5000mAh battery with 80W SuperVooc charging, and features “all-round armour”.

A closer look at AI

But specs aside, let’s take a close look at its AI features, starting with the camera, where most of them are. It has a triple rear camera, with a 50MP main shooter with optical image stabilisation, 50MP telephoto, and an 8MP ultra-wide lenses. It also has a 50MP selfie-cam.

With OPPO’s new AI Eraser feature, you can snap selfies and regular shots at popular tourist spot, and afterwards, remove people or objects to get the perfect shot. It’s a rather nifty, addictive feature if you want to remove anything unsightly.

And if you want the best group shots, AI Clear Face increases clarity and reduces distortion, while AI Best Face means no more retakes – it fixes closed eyes in a group shot of three people or more.

If you want to turn your photos into fun stickers to share on Whatsapp, the AI Smart Image Matting 2.0 takes care of that – simply long-press the photo and it will automatically highlight the person, food or object and add it to your sticker gallery.

Another feature rolling out in SA this August is AI Studio, which generates AI images of yourself from a single photo with templates; it will also work with group shots.

Other non-camera-related AI features include AI LinkBoost for a seamless connection and faster sharing in crowded areas, elevators, or basement parking.

On the productivity front, AI Recording Summary will help you catch up on meetings by summarising the important bits, while AI Summary will condense long articles into summarise key points.

If you need help with writing or composing emails, AI Writer has your back, which also adds style to the sentences. And if you’re too tired to read, AI Speak will let you take a break and read articles for you.

Finally, if you’re making calls from crowded or noisy places, whether shopping or travelling, AI Clear Voice will isolate your voice and minimise background noises, so the line is clear.
