Saturday, 9 February was earmarked in the diaries of soccer fans as a day not to be missed. The date was reserved for the biggest fixture on the soccer calendar, the Soweto Derby. Whenever Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates clash, diski fans around the country put their lives on hold and glue themselves to the nearest television set to watch the Soweto giants battle it out.
The prestige of importance of the Soweto Derby offered the perfect opportunity for Vodacom Red to host an experience that rewarded Red clients with a passion not only for soccer, but also for the Mighty Amakhosi.
The exclusive Vodacom Soweto Derby Red Experience was attended by 200 Vodacom Red clients and their partners, and they were treated to a day where they got to share their love for Kaizer Chiefs with other Amakhosi fans in the relaxed atmosphere of the popular Fourways Farmers Market.
Guests got to experience the Soweto Derby like never before. The relaxed atmosphere of the market was the perfect setting for the event which included watching the game on a specially commissioned big screen while enjoying the best artisan food, delectable desserts and tailor made cocktails from the Gin Bar. Vodacom Red’s special guest at the Soweto Derby Red Experience was former Kaizer Chiefs, Leeds United and Bafana Bafana captain, Lucas Radebe whose presence resonated well with the Vodacom Red clients in attendance.
Having played in the Derby himself, Radebe said that it is quite an experience to walk out of the tunnel in front of at least 80 000 fans but one has to make sure to keep calm. In stark contrast to his personal match day experiences, watching the match in such a different environment was something new for many guests including the former Bafana Bafana captain himself. 'Being here with Vodacom Red is a different experience. There is a big screen to watch a big game. The Soweto Derby is the one game that brings people together and to watch it in a different setting where the atmosphere is so nice is absolutely great,' said Radebe
Along with Radebe, another legend of South African soccer was present at the Vodacom Soweto Derby Red Experience. Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder, Josta Dladla wowed the Red clients with his charming smile and warm personality. He expressed his delight at being part of the Red Experience adding that the scenery and setting of the environment made for a good change to enjoy the beautiful game.
'It’s nice to be able to find a cool venue to watch the game. The Farmers Market here in Fourways is definitely the right place for a different kind of vibe and it gave fans a great alternative to watching the game at the stadium, said Dladla'
The soccer action at the stadium ended up as a draw with both teams scoring one goal apiece. But the score line at the end of the match proved to be a winning result for some of the Red attendants at the viewing experience, with three lucky Vodacom Red winners walking away with a high end Samsung smartphone after predicting the correct score for the game. Following on the success of soccer’s first Vodacom Red Reward, more Red Experiences will be taking place during 2019. Vodacom Red clients can visit www.redrewards.co.za and register for a chance to attend any of the upcoming soccer Red Rewards.
