Top TV Streaming Apps

We present our favourite digital streaming apps.

South Africans are spoilt for choice when it comes to TV streaming services – and with the recent launch of BritBox, you have yet another option to consider. The great news is that being on the Vodacom network gives you access to our Red Hot Data deals: 10GB a month for R179/pm over 24 months, or 20GB/pm for R229 over 24 months – more than sufficient for streaming your favourite shows and movies!

Here’s our pick of the best apps:

Prime Video

Amazon’s Prime Video is currently the streaming service to watch, with a couple of high-end series in development that have viewers eagerly awaiting their release. The Wheel of Time series, based on the epic fantasy books by Robert Jordan, premiers this November and there is also the services 'Lord of the Rings' series which is set to launch next year. An Amazon Prime subscription costs $5.99/pm (±R90 at current exchange rates).

BritBox

The newest streaming offering in SA is BBC and itv’s BritBox, aptly described as the best of British TV – especially if you’re into the distinctive humour. It comes with a seven-day free trial to watch across categories like drama, crime, comedy, documentaries, lifestyle and entertainment. You can stream on five devices simultaneously from one account, and it works on smart TVs, such as LG and Samsung, and streaming devices like Fire TV, Apple TV and Google Chromecast. It also works across iOS, Android, Mac and Windows. BritBox costs R99/pm or R999/pa.

Netflix

Netflix needs no introduction with its extensive catalogue of feature films, documentaries, TV shows, anime, and award-winning original shows. TV series are typically released all in one go, which has ensured binge watching is everyone’s favourite pastime in lockdown. It’s available on most smartphones, tablets, smart TVs, media streaming devices and gaming consoles. You can create user profiles for adults or kids, and set a PIN for the dedicated Netflix Kids platform so your children only view kid-friendly content. Netflix recently introduced a mobile streaming plan for R49/pm to watch from a single device, with a range of other options.

Showmax

Multichoice’s Showmax is a great option, as it’s continuously adding more features, such as live sport, original documentaries and blockbusters. It also brings the best of HBO shows, local shows, and movies in different languages for all South Africans, as well as a kids’ section. Like Netflix, it offers a mobile-only subscription plan at R39/pm alongside a standard and Pro offering. The Pro version includes a range of live SuperSport channels and comes with a 14-day free trial.
