As a three-time number 1 ranked Top Employer, Vodacom takes care of its people by supporting their human rights.
Vodacom was recently named Africa’s three-time number 1 ranked Top Employer, not just because they were better than the competition but because the Vodacom Group received a near-perfect score. It’s a massive achievement but it’s also a visible recognition of how Vodacom takes care of its people. The company is committed to putting people first and supporting the human rights of staff. Here’s a glimpse of what it’s like to work at Vodacom.
1. Employee wellbeing
To have a high-performing workplace that delivers great results for customers and shareholders, you need to equip people to do their best work. That includes looking after their mental and physical wellbeing. As a technology company, Vodacom understands the importance of digital balance. The company’s wellbeing programme helps staff engage in meaningful offline activities, including company sports clubs, such as golf, soccer, netball and running, and special interest groups around shared pastimes like music and baking.

2. Mental health support
Vodacom’s Employee Assistance programme makes counselling and life management tools available to any employee who needs them. Staff can reach out if they’ve suffered a traumatic event that they’re struggling to cope with, for example, or if they need help with budgeting so they can better manage their finances.
3. Maternity benefits for Vodacom staff
It is widely recommended that newborn babies be exclusively breastfed for six months. Many new moms end up in a position where they’re struggling to keep up with the demands of expressing milk after they return to work, leaving them stressed out and exhausted. Vodacom takes care of its people by offering employees two generous maternity leave options: six months (24 weeks) fully paid maternity leave or 16 weeks fully paid maternity leave with the option to work 30 hours per week for six months after returning to work. Through the ReConnect programme, women who have taken a long career break (for example, to raise children) have access to mentorship, training and additional support.

4. Support for persons with disabilities
Vodacom takes care of its people with disabilities by creating a culture of inclusion. All staff receive compulsory disability awareness training so they can learn how to be empathetic to their colleagues with disabilities. Assistive technology is available to help staff with disabilities perform their jobs efficiently so they can contribute equally to their teams. Vodacom recently became the first organisation in South Africa to embed sign language into the workplace. This initiative is being rolled out across the company in various ways as of January this year. The company’s Disability Employee Forum keeps staff informed and educated through webinars, talks and expos.
5. Benefits Vodacom staff enjoy
Security goes beyond a monthly pay cheque. Vodacom cares for its people by offering employees additional benefits. The company has its own pension fund and membership is compulsory for all employees. In addition, there are flexible benefits for death and disability and employees can choose to belong to the company medical aid scheme or a medical aid scheme of their choice. Flexible working arrangements give staff alternatives to the standard 8-5 working day. Employees are also entitled to many different types of leave.
In a world that feels increasingly fast-paced and uncertain, Vodacom understands that business thrives when people thrive.
