Hands-on: Huawei P7 and Ascend G6

Copied!

The P7, which we first saw in Paris last month, is super-slim at 6.5mm and feels great in the hand. It has a premium feel to it and at 124g makes you forget you’re holding a 5-inch handset.

One of the main focus areas of the Ascend P7 is the whopping 8-megapixel front-facing camera, or the selfie-cam, as most of you know it. Huawei designed the P7 around feedback from users who wanted to take better selfies and call the panoramic selfie a ‘groufie’ – a selfie with a group of people.

We tested the 8-megapixel selfie-cam with Vincent Hoffman at the media launch at the Radisson Blu Gautrain Hotel.

The main shooter has 13 megapixels and uses Sony’s fourth-generation sensors. It has been improved over the P6 to take better pictures in low-light conditions, adjusting brightness, noise and colour and has an ISO that goes up to 3600.

The other, lesser-known handset showcased, which will be available exclusively to Vodacom, is the Ascend G6.

This 4.5-inch mid-range handset should not be underestimated. It has a solid feel in the hand and is designed just as beautifully as the P7.

It’s 7.85mm thin and weighs only 115g. It should give you good-quality selfies too, with its 5-megapixel wide-angle front camera. It runs on a 1.2GHz quad-core processor with 1GB of RAM and 8GB internal storage expandable up to 32GB via microSD. Connectivity options include LTE, Bluetooth, and NFC.
