5 Mobile Apps That Prove AI Is Nothing New

ChatGPT has been on everyone’s lips in recent months, but you’ve probably been using AI-based apps daily for ages.

Chat GPT may have exploded in popularity over the last few months shining a spotlight on AI. But did you know that you have been using  AI for a while already? To prove this, here are some common apps that use artificial intelligence to function. You may already have them on your phone, and if not, download and try them with fast and reliable connectivity which you can get from Vodacom Fibre

Gmail

Did you know the autocorrects and spam filters you rely on in Gmail are AI doing what it does best? Then there’s the smart replies feature, which reads your email to come up with accurate replies. To use the service, you first need to opt-in; it’s been a game-changer for those who have.
Coming soon: Google also recently announced the ability to generate emails on your behalf from bullet points and to produce AI imagery and other multimedia for Slides.

TikTok

One of the world’s most downloaded apps relies heavily on AI to offer a unique experience. The algorithm has been praised for its accuracy and ability to pick up potentially viral videos based on interaction. You also get a range of filters like “Bold Glamour”, which has won plaudits for being realistic in execution while making you look unrealistic. It uses AI to scan your face and then delivers a filter in a revolutionary way – not even placing your hand in front of your face will change what you see on-screen!

Otter

Live transcribing apps like Otter use AI to translate human speech into writing. This means you no longer need to write notes during a presentation or interview and take hours to transcribe them afterwards. These apps have been trained to understand different accents – and they get better with time. Otter does a good job of being highly accurate most of the time. The app offers an all-in-one solution, supporting other features that include images, highlighting, speeding up speech, and more.

Camera apps

Most smartphone camera apps support AI in some form, whether to compose images or edit facial features. You may have also heard the term “computational photography”, which refers to photography that uses digital rather than optical techniques for capturing. To be fair, this could be a hit or miss with photographers as it enhances images to the point that they don’t look real. Still, who doesn’t love the night mode on their camera when it’s pitch-black outside, but the image shows detail and bright colours? Yeah, that’s AI at work.

Smart assistants

Smart speakers, Google Assistant, Siri, or Alexa are all classic examples of AI in action. AI-powered voice assistants are trained to do tasks for you, just like a PA. Many companies use chatbots to answer queries. Sadly, they don’t give AI a good reputation, as any frustrated customer who’s been sent in circles will attest. They may have been around for a while already, but Chatbots are clearly still a work in progress.

With AI becoming more prevalent than ever, it will eventually get further ingrained into our everyday lives. This will require a fast and reliable internet connection, which, once again, you can get with Vodacom Fibre
