Samsung has unveiled its new flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S23 series. As expected, it’s made up of the top-of-the-range S23 Ultra, a premium S23+ and a more mainstream S23. Here are some of the major features to look forward to in the latest release.
The Galaxy S23 series is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip, custom-made for Galaxy devices with an accelerated CPU and GPU performance, making them the fastest Snapdragon phones to date.
Thanks to the new chipset, the devices all run efficiently, especially the Ultra’s 5000mAh battery, which promises to last 20% longer than its predecessor.
Gaming on the S23 Ultra also gets a boost with enhanced graphics and AI performance with its GPU and neural processing unit said to be 40% faster than its previous models.
It supports real-time ray tracing, which offers an almost PC-like gaming experience, with noticeably more lifelike renders from its tech, which simulates and tracks rays of light.
Phones across the Galaxy S23 series boast a vapour-cooling chamber to prevent overheating while gaming, allowing for hours of gameplay.
The new powerful Galaxy S23 Ultra now sports a 200MP camera with advanced Nightography features. And thanks to enhanced capabilities from its chip, it can distinguish multiple layers on an image, such as glasses, facial hair, or curly hairstyles, which appear clearer in pics. It also has 12MP ultra-wide and two 10MP telephoto lenses.
Both the Galaxy S23+ and S23 also have a triple rear lens but they feature 50MP wide, 12MP ultra-wide and 10MP telephoto lenses.
The Galaxy S23 series has fast autofocus and a 12MP Super HDR selfie camera that supports 60fps and 360 audio recordings. The enhanced camera also shoots videos in low light using AI and supports 8K resolution at 30fps on the wide-angle lens.
Other camera updates across the series include a double optical image stabiliser, an adaptive pixel sensor and the ability to shoot from the Expert RAW app for DSLR-style images. The app has multi-exposure that supports astrophotography.
Samsung is focusing more on the planet from previously shrinking the size of its boxes, to now creating the Galaxy S23 series using more recycled materials.
All handsets use recycled aluminium, glass, and recycled plastics from discarded fishing nets and water bottles.
Tying into sustainability is an extended life on all Samsung Galaxy devices – Samsung promises four generations of Android OS upgrades and five years of security updates.
